Sponge

A thin layer of spongy, cellular rubber attached between the blade and the rubber topsheet. The combination of sponge and topsheet is known as a sandwich rubber.

The layer of sponge increases the speed and spin that can be put on the ball. Players may also apply speed glue to the sponge layer to increase the speed and spin that can be achieved further.
