Opening Up

A phrase that is used to describe the first attack (either a drive, loop or smash) made by a player.

The opening up stroke is usually less aggressive and powerful than a player's subsequent attacks. The player hopes that their opening shot will draw a weaker response from their opponent, that can then be attacked with power.
